DOT/DMV District #4, Wisconsin Rapids, WI
Department of Transportation and Department of Motor Vehicles
Choice location on the beautiful Wisconsin River was one reason the State of Wisconsin opted to renovate and expand this nondescript ‘50’s-style building. Transformed, today’s bold new structure reflects its environment in large expanses of curved energy-efficient glass that face the water. Terraced landscaping, a paved bike path, and a scenic river walkway make it a showpiece among state-owned properties.
The existing 36,880 square-foot office building was totally renovated and combined with a new three-story 19,400 square-foot addition. Outside features include five different exterior materials, from the original stone and marble finishes, to new 4’ x 4’ Makato stone panels, face brick, and a glazed aluminum curtain wall. The Makato stone is one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable.
